Introduction to Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Your eyes tell your story long before you ever say a word. They reveal how rested you feel, how vibrant your energy is, and often (unfairly) how old or tired you may appear. For many people, changes around the eyes happen quietly over time: heavy upper lids that make makeup harder to apply, puffiness beneath the eyes that never seems to go away, or a constant look of fatigue even after a full night’s sleep.

Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, offers a gentle yet powerful way to improve the appearance of this delicate area and restore a brighter, more open appearance. It is rapidly growing in popularity among facial plastic surgery procedures, with the American Society of Plastic Surgery reporting that in 2024, 120,755 blepharoplasty surgeries were performed, the most of any facial plastic surgery that year.1

At Tiffany Pham MD Facial Plastic Surgery in San Diego, Dr. Pham’s patient-centered philosophy focuses on enhancing what already makes you you, while creating results that feel authentic, balanced, and emotionally uplifting. Dr. Pham regularly meets with patients throughout San Diego, including La Jolla, Carmel Valley, Del Mar, and Rancho Santa Fe, CA.

What is Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery is a facial procedure that improves the appearance of the upper, lower, or both eyelids. Over time, gravity, genetics, and volume changes can cause skin laxity, under-eye hollows, or puffiness that creates a tired or aged look, which is why blepharoplasty carefully addresses these concerns by removing or repositioning excess skin, fat, and tissue to restore a smoother contour around the eyes.

Unlike many cosmetic procedures that focus on a single issue, eyelid surgery has a ripple effect throughout the face. Patients often notice they look more awake, approachable, and refreshed; sometimes even before others can pinpoint exactly what changed.

Tyepes Of Eyelid Surgery

Upper eyelid surgery corrects heaviness or drooping caused by loose skin or excess tissue along the upper eyelids. This can interfere with vision, makeup application, or simply leave you looking perpetually exhausted. Discreet incisions are placed within the natural eyelid crease to remove or sculpt tissue while keeping scars virtually invisible once healed.

Who Are the Best Candidates for Eyelid Surgery?

In the greater San Diego area, including La Jolla, Del Mar, Rancho Santa Fe, and Carmel Valley, candidates for this procedure are usually those bothered by drooping upper lids, under-eye bags, or tired-looking eyes, who are in good overall health and have realistic expectations. Some patients seek blepharoplasty in their 30s or 40s due to genetics, while others pursue it later in life. To be clear, patients of any age can seek out this procedure.

What Are the Benefits of Eyelid Surgery?

Visually, patients enjoy smoother contours, reduced puffiness, and a more alert appearance. Practically, upper eyelid surgery can improve peripheral vision and make everyday routines, like applying makeup, much easier.

On a deeper level, many patients share that they feel more comfortable and confident in social and professional settings after their procedure. Looking in the mirror and seeing a reflection that aligns with how you feel inside can be incredibly empowering, and that sense of alignment is at the heart of Dr. Tiffany Pham’s philosophy of care.

What’s the First Step?

For patients in the San Diego area considering a blepharoplasty, we invite you to first sit down with Dr. Tiffany Pham for a consultation focused on your goals, concerns, and what a blepharoplasty can do for you. Throughout this appointment, you will have the opportunity to ask questions and gain a better understanding of the procedure, while Dr. Tiffany Pham examines the anatomy around your eyes and develops a surgical plan tailored to your unique needs. She will explain the procedure in detail, what to expect during recovery, how to prepare, and when you are likely to begin seeing results. Pricing and financing will also be discussed during this time, as we aim to ensure you have a clear understanding of all factors before making any decisions. When you feel comfortable, your surgery can be scheduled.

What to Expect on the Day of Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure at a San Diego surgical facility with Dr. Tiffany Pham. It requires either local anesthesia or can be done with IV sedation or general anesthesia, and generally takes about 2 hours to perform.

During the procedure, Dr. Tiffany Pham will remove excess skin and fat through a cut along the eyelid fold if the patient is seeking an upper blepharoplasty. For a lower blepharoplasty, excess fat is either removed or repositioned, with an incision made inside the lower eyelid. Some people may require a skin pinch, in which excess skin is removed through an external lower eyelid incision.

Once completed, you will be monitored while the anesthesia wears off before being discharged with your aftercare instructions.

Eyelid Surgery Recovery

Your Guide to Post-Eyelid Surgery Care

The most common side effects during recovery are swelling and bruising, which will be most prominent during the first few weeks post-operation. Your eyes may be watery or slightly blurred during this time, and you may experience some light sensitivity. These effects are normal and dissipate quickly, but we will, of course, ensure you have instructions on how to handle them throughout recovery. Ice packs, sleeping with your head elevated, wearing sunglasses, and using prescription eye drops are recommended at this time, while smoking, heavy lifting, wearing contacts, or rubbing your eyes should be avoided.

How Much Does Eyelid Surgery Cost in San Diego, CA?

The cost of eyelid surgery in San Diego, La Jolla, Del Mar, Rancho Santa Fe, and Carmel Valley varies from patient to patient, depending on whether they are having an upper blepharoplasty, a lower blepharoplasty, or both. Other factors include whether other procedures are performed in conjunction with the blepharoplasty, the type of anesthesia used, the surgeon’s expertise and experience, and medication/facility fees. All of this will be discussed during your consultation, as the cost will be broken down in detail for transparent pricing. If you are in need of a blepharoplasty for medical reasons, such as vision complications, it’s possible that your insurance may cover a portion of the cost, depending on your plan. We are happy to help you navigate these details and discuss potential financing options if needed.
